Detailed description of The Retreat

The Retreat golf course is a private 18-hole golf course located in Cleburne, Texas.

The retreat golf course first opened for play in 2004. The course was designed by Harrison Frazer.

The Retreat is an established gated, private golf community, within easy commuting distance of Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex. The Retreat's 3,000 acres were originally inhabited by Indian tribes who chose this land because of the serene beauty, abundant wildlife and access to the Brazos River.

The golf course built at The Retreat features lots of live oaks, ravines, limestone cliffs, and picturesque vistas of the country side and tiff Bermuda fairways that are in near perfect condition. The roughs, even among the trees that are well manicured; bent grass greens are big, undulating, true, and in excellent shape. Nno two holes are the same, each is unique and different; dog legs, blind shots, sloping fairways, ravines, elevated tee boxes, and more; challenging but fair layout; perfectly groomed traps with white Kosse sand. The waterfall 16th hole) may be the prettiest hole in Texas and sets you up for the remaining two of what may be the three best finishing holes in Texas.

This beauty is also a beast. The Retreat golf course plays to 7,046 yards. Par for the course is 72. Pay attention, the Black tees have a course rating of 75.0 and a slope rating of 145. Now you know why we say this beauty is a beast. However, there are Gold tees (6,596 yards), Blue tees (6,173 yards), White tees (5,696 yards) and Red tees (5,009 yards) so that you can dial in the level of beast you want to challenge.

Layout is fine, but it seemed if you werent using SkyCaddie, that there was no way to navigate the course as there is no yardage book available. Course knowledge (or range finder) is then a must. The greens had just been top-dressed, and a chemical that was supposed to entice the green to hold more moisture than normal, actually burned them. Even tho the greens were burnt, they were playable - on the fast side just as they should be. It would have been nice to see a green layout as there are a few blind shots into greens where you have to guess which side is the "short-side". All-in-all, I would play this course again, this time from the tips. The layout is short from the Gold tees.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again

Private golf club, but you can play if you take a tour of the real estate offerings. Great course.

By the way, the photo posted on this page is of the #18 green. The tee box is located at the top of the waterfall. It is an unusual par 3 to end the round, but definitely the signature hole.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles
Bottom line: Ranks with the best in this price level
